Food waste in Denmark reduced by 25% and 4,4 billion DKK

FUSIONS partner and Denmark’s largest NGO against food waste, Stop Wasting Food movement Denmark (Stop Spild Af Mad) is celebrating its 7 years birthday with great news: within the last 5 years, food waste in Denmark is reduced by 4,4 BILLION DKK, equivalent to 25%.

Stop Wasting Food movement Denmark (Stop Spild Af Mad), the many volunteers, the Danish people and stakeholders from the entire value chain have contributed to significant reduction in food waste. Since 2010, Denmark’s food waste is reduced by 25% and 4,4 billion DKK.

This looks like European record, only followed by the United Kingdom’s reduction of food waste with 21% during the years 2008-2013.

These figures are from the Danish Trade Magazine (Dansk Handelsblad) and Danish Agriculture & Food Council. Founder of Denmark’s biggest NGO against food waste, Stop Wasting Food movement Denmark (Stop Spild Af Mad), Selina Juul, is thrilled about these new numbers:

“This is a fantastic result of our work! Stop Wasting Food movement Denmark was fighting against food waste for the last 7 years. With massive actions such as consumer education campaigns, school campaigns, United Against Food Waste events and collaboration with entire value chain, the food waste in Denmark had beed drastically reduced. We have not reached our goal yet - but we are on the right track.”

Danish Trade Magazine (Dansk Handelsblad) reports that Denmark is the country in EU with most initiatives against food waste; all Danish supermarket chains have today a food waste reduction strategy, over 300 restaurants in Denmark offer free doggybags and are members of REFOOD label against food waste. Hospitals, foodservice and festivals are also reducing food waste - and even the Prime Minister of Denmark has food waste on the political agenda. The financial crisis in 2008 has also contributed to increasing Danish awareness to minimize the overconsumption.

Stop Wasting Food movement Denmark (Stop Spild Af Mad) har contributed to public debate on food waste in more than 18,000 press articles in Denmark and internationally and is an official Partner of UN FAO initiative SAVE FOOD, the EU project FUSIONS and the UN FAO an UNEP campaign Think.Eat.Save. At the moment, Selina Juul and partners are working on establishing the world’s first international Think Tank against food waste.
